Oceans North Canada commends Government on Appointments to Polar Commission
OTTAWA, Nov. 4 /CNW/ - Oceans North Canada welcomes the announcement yesterday by Minister Duncan on the appointment of board members to the Canadian Polar Commission. The Canadian Polar Commission has an important role in the development and implementation of Canada's Northern Strategy, particularly now as the Arctic deals with the unprecedented change resulting from climate change.
"The appointment of a new board of the Canadian Polar Commission, comprised of people with strong connections to the north and the aboriginal peoples sends a strong signal about Canada's commitment to dealing with its Northern territory," said Trevor Taylor, policy director for Oceans North Canada. "We commend Minister Duncan on this action and wish the board members well as they consider the many issues confronting Canada's North."
The Canadian Polar Commission has a mandate to develop, promote, and disseminate research related to the polar regions. The Arctic represents more than one third of Canada, it is the home to Inuit, Inuvialuit, and First Nations people, the people on the front line of the climate change battle.
Oceans North Canada promotes science-and-community-based conservation of Canada's northern seas and the resulting wellbeing of indigenous Arctic peoples.
