Official Statement re: G8 Development Meeting

TORONTO, April 28 /CNW/ - We welcome the statement by the G8 Development Ministers today and are pleased to see that we have now moved from a verbal commitment from the Prime Minister to an agreed set of common principles among the G8 countries that will shape what the infant and maternal health initiative will look like when it is announced in June.

We are extremely pleased to see Canada taking on what could be an historic role in getting the world back on track to meeting the Millenium Development Goals to reduce infant and maternal mortality in developing countries. A successful Canadian-led initiative has the potential to save millions of lives - the lives of mothers and their children - and it is something we can all be proud of.
