OHA Media Statement re: Federal Government Supporting Ontario's Hospital-Based Research Enterprise
TORONTO, May 15, 2020 /CNW/ - "We've seen the dedication of researchers, clinician-scientists, and their teams who are working in Ontario's 23 academic research hospitals to defeat COVID-19. Equally committed are the teams working to discover better care, treatments and cures for cancer, cerebral palsy, heart disease, alzheimer's, autism, diabetes, mental illness, and other conditions and diseases.
On behalf of Ontario's 141 public hospitals, the Ontario Hospital Association (OHA) welcomes the Government of Canada's investment announced today that will help support hospital-based researchers. The importance of health research cannot be understated in helping rebuild the economy and move the province and the country forward.
Since the start of the pandemic in Canada, non-COVID-19 research at Ontario's hospitals has been paused or dramatically scaled back, and today's investment is one step towards sustaining the research enterprise as we work together in restarting these other areas of health research. Given the challenges being faced by the sector, it's important to note that the speed of the funding to reach hospitals is as critical as the announcement itself.
Ontario's research hospitals have long been the engines of health invention and discovery for the provincial and national innovation landscape and bioeconomy. From Ottawa, London, Toronto, Kingston, Sudbury, and Thunder Bay, the more than 20,000 researchers and staff at these hospitals are driven by their passion to help Canadians, and ultimately the broader global community, live better and longer lives.
Innovation comes from the courage and leadership to think differently. If there's one thing emerging from the COVID-19 experience it's that we need new thinking about the way we deliver care. Ontario's research hospitals are committed to harnessing our collective strengths and together with our health system partners, we will continue to advance the highest quality patient care."
