TORONTO, Sept. 19, 2016 /CNW/ - Twenty-four of the world's best beach volleyball teams came to Toronto vying for 'Olympic revenge' and the $100,000 USD prize at the 2016 Swatch Beach Volleyball FIVB World Tour Finals, but neither the men's or women's Olympic champions could be defeated as the German and Brazilian teams took home gold.
Thousands of enthusiastic Canadian fans watched the all-Brazilian men's final as Cerutti/Schmidt showed the world their outstanding talent defeating Evandro/Pedro Solberg. Bourne/Hyden took home bronze, defeating hometown heroes Saxton/Schalk in straight sets.
Ludwig/Walkenhorst overpowered the Swiss team defeating Heidrich/Zumkehr to win their fourth Major title of 2016. In addition to gold at Sunday's Swatch FIVB World Tour Finals, the German's also won Olympic gold, European and German titles plus the A1 Major Klagenfurt, smart Major Hamburg and the Olsztyn Grand Slam.
The victory on the shore of Lake Ontario sealed an amazing comeback after the duo lost their first two matches of the tournament in the pool play. "We are really speechless," Ludwig told the media, "this season was amazing for us. As a team we really improved a lot. We put everything in that last game and it turned out great!" Kira Walkenhorst added: "I am really happy that we won this gold medal, even though we didn't have a good start in this tournament. Right now we just want to enjoy and don't want to think about next season."
The 2017 FIVB World Championships in Vienna is the next goal for the German superstars, Kira Walkenhorst admitted: "We'll try our best and another medal would be great. Only the World Championships are missing now!"
