Stage is set for a Super Sunday Showdown with both men's and women's finals
TORONTO, Sept. 17, 2016 /CNW/ - If Olympic gold medalists Ludwig/Walkenhorst are going to clinch another first place on the podium at the Swatch Beach Volleyball FIVB Finals at Polson Pier, they're going to have to do it the hard way. On Thursday the German team shocked the Toronto crowd by losing both their pool play matches. But on Friday they were back playing at their best.
After defeating the Canadian team Bansley/Wilkerson early in the day, Ludwig/Walkenhorst faced off against Americans Walsh-Jennings/April. After a disappointing day three, the German team defeated the American superstars 2-1 to advance to the semi-finals. "It was an amazing match," Walkenhorst said. "Actually I can't believe it," Ludwig added. "It is always a tough battle against them. But even if we are not feeling a 100 per cent we always come back as a team."
In the semi-finals on Saturday Ludwig/Walkenhorst will need to perform on a golden-level when they play against Franca/Antunes from Brazil at 10:00am EST. The other semi-final showdown at 11:00am EST is an all Swiss affair: Forrer /Vergé-Dépré face-off agaist Heidrich /Zumkehr. Excitement is guaranteed as teams fight for their place in the women's final that now is set for Sunday, 12:15 pm.
In the men's bracket all eyes are on the Olympic champions, Brazilians Alison/ Bruno; they advanced to the quarter-finals on Saturday as did Kantor/ Losiak from Poland, Smedins/ Samoilovs from Latvia and Bourne/ Hyden from the USA. Two Canadian teams are still in the round of 16 on Saturday: Canadians Binstock /Schachter play against Fijalek/Prudel from Poland at 12:00pm EST and Canadian Saxton/Schalk play against Brouwer/Meeuwsen from the Netherlands, the Bronze medalists in Rio, at 1:30pm EST.
