GATINEAU, QC, April 19, 2018 /CNW/ - As the 50th anniversary of Canada's Official Languages Act draws near, the Office of the Commissioner of Official Languages is inviting Canadians to share their opinions on very specific aspects of the Act through on-line public consultations.
"It has become apparent that some sections of the Act require clarification to avoid different interpretations and to ensure that the Act is in line with today's reality," said Raymond Théberge, Commissioner of Official Languages of Canada.
In areas such as the use of new technologies, the methods used to deliver government services to Canadians or the significant contribution of immigration, Canadian society has changed in many ways since the Act was first adopted in 1969 and had its last major review in 1988.
"These public consultations will help obtain input from members of the public on issues that affect their daily lives. Clearly, official languages are everyone's business, and for this consultation, the floor is yours," added Mr. Théberge.
The public consultations are part of a broader discussion, which includes the Office of the Commissioner's consultations on the ground regarding the modernization of the Act.
"In light of these consultations and our own reflection exercise, I will have the opportunity to present a position paper to parliamentarians in the coming months. I expect that the government has also started its own review in order to establish a clear position on the issue in 2019," said Mr. Théberge.
