35 of Canada's top talent in trades and technology invited to take on the world at the WorldSkills London 2011 Competition
GATINEAU, QC, May 31 /CNW Telbec/ - After the completion of two days of intense competition, many students proudly took the podium at the closing ceremonies of the Canadian Skills Competition held in Waterloo, on May 23 to receive official recognition for their outstanding performance. Of those that excelled, 35 talented youth in trades and technology were invited to join Team Canada to represent our country at the WorldSkills Competition in London, United Kingdom October 5-8, 2011. Made up of 31 male and 4 female competitors ranging in age from 15 to 21,
"With ongoing support from the Government of Canada, industry leaders and educators, these talented young people represent a bright future for Canada's skilled trade and technology workforce, and we couldn't be more proud," said Shaun Thorson, Executive Director, Skills/Compétences Canada, the national not-for-profit organization that actively promotes careers in skilled trades and as Canada's member organization of World Skills International manages Canada's participation.
Canada hosted the most recent WorldSkills Competition in September of 2009. Team Canada's outstanding performance at WorldSkills Calgary 2009 resulted in a record 8 medals and top 5 medal point ranking out of 51 countries/regions.
WorldSkills London 2011 represents Canada's eleventh participation in a WorldSkills International event, an international Competition which takes place every two years and brings together the world's brightest in skilled trades and technology. Next year's Competition will bring together more than 900 competitors from 52 WorldSkills International Member countries/regions who will participate in team and individual competitions. Team Canada 2011 will be the largest delegation Canada has ever sent to a WorldSkills Competition outside of Canada, competing in 32 of the 45 skills categories.
