Ontario College Students Explore Party Positions
TORONTO, June 9, 2014 /CNW/ - On June 5th the College Student Alliance released the final response to its request for platform submissions from Ontario's party leaders. The completed matrix is available at www.itsyourvote.ca. The following are selected positions for post-secondary education taken from platform submissions and other sources:
Ontario New Democratic Party
- the Ontario NDP will freeze post-secondary tuition at 2014 levels, and make provincial student loans interest-free
- hiring of an independent Financial Accountability Officer
Green Party of Ontario
- index tuition to inflation
- increase funding for university and college operating budgets to ensure a high quality of education
Ontario Progressive Conservative Party
- eliminate the 30% off Ontario Tuition Grant, implement a "no qualified student left behind" policy.
- bias enrollment growth towards colleges; facilitate credit transfer between colleges and universities
Ontario Liberal Party
- $500 million over 10 years to support deferred maintenance projects at colleges and universities
- continuation of the 30% off Tuition Grant
