Ontario College Students Relieved with Tentative Agreement
TORONTO, Aug. 29, 2012 /CNW/ - This morning, Ontario's college students received some positive news as the College Employer Council and the Ontario Public Service Employees Union (OPSEU) have reached a tentative agreement pending ratification.
"Students are relieved to hear that their education and training will not be jeopardized this academic year due to a faculty strike," says Ciara Byrne, President of the College Student Alliance. "This news could not have come at a better time, now students will be able to move forward without having any interruptions this school year. We applaud the Council and OPSEU for reaching a tentative agreement prior to the start of the school year."
After nearly 3 months of bargaining, both the Council and OPSEU have reached a tentative agreement which includes a two-year wage freeze, pay grid movement and language modifications on coordinators and partial load. The details of the agreement will not be released until after ratification, which has yet to be scheduled.
"This news is a win for everyone," says Tyler Epp, Director of Advocacy of the CSA. "Students, faculty and administration can now focus on academics. We are happy that a tentative agreement has been reached."
The CSA has been providing up-to-date unbiased information through www.collegebargaining.ca, a website that was built for student associations across Ontario to provide bargaining updates to their students.
The College Student Alliance (CSA) is an advocacy organization, which has been proudly serving Ontario's college and college-university students since 1975. The CSA currently represents 16 colleges and 23 student councils with over 135,000 full-time student members throughout the province.
