Minister of Agriculture joins Egg Farmers of Ontario as it donates $30,000 to Breakfast for Learning
HAMILTON, ON, Oct. 29, 2012 /CNW/ - Egg Farmers of Ontario (EFO) wrapped up World Egg Month celebrations with a $30,000 donation to Breakfast for Learning at Westwood Elementary School, alongside Ontario Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, the Honourable Ted McMeekin last Friday. The cheque presentation was part of an "eggs-citing" morning of "egg-ducation" for two grade three classes who learned about egg farming in Ontario from area egg farmers and the famous travelling egg farm, complete with white and brown hens and a grading machine.
"This month Ontario egg farmers have been out in their communities saying thank you for everyone's support," said EFO Chair Scott Graham. "We are strong supporters of the work Breakfast for Learning does in schools here in Hamilton and across the province."
"Every day there are children across the country who go to school hungry," said Wendy Wong, President and CEO, Breakfast for Learning. "We are pleased to be working with Egg Farmers of Ontario and thank them for their generous support which will help kids attend school well-nourished and ready to learn providing them with the best chance of success in life."
Throughout the month of October the travelling egg farm and its cackle of hens have been "egg-ducating" Ontarians at a series of Egg Farmers Give Thanks events where farmers surprise people with a tasty lunch, egg farming trivia and fun prize giveaways.
"Our farmers love being asked about life as a professional egg farmer and sharing their stories," said Scott Graham. "World Egg Month is a great time to remind Ontarians about where their eggs come from and celebrate the stars of the show - the hens."
Egg Farmers of Ontario is an association that represents more than 400 egg farm families. EFO works to ensure that consumers have access to safe, reliable and reasonably priced eggs with a fair return to the farmers.
Established in 1992, Breakfast for Learning is Canada's first national charity dedicated to supporting school-based nutrition programs. In the 2011-2012 school year, Breakfast for Learning operating in every province and territory funded 4,431 breakfast, lunch and snack programs, within 2,509 school/community sites, feeding more than 430,000 children and youth over 67 million meals and snacks.
