Ontario Liberal Party Calls on Andrea Horwath to Apologize For Baseless Smear
TORONTO, May 28, 2014 /CNW/ - Allegations today made by the NDP are completely false, reprehensible and represent a new low for that once principled party.
They distributed information based on discredited court testimony by a convicted felon who wrongly implicated 172 public officials. Three non-partisan public servants pled guilty and were convicted in the scheme.
This individual falsely named nine past and present Liberal MPPs as well as the late Jim Flaherty and an unnamed "Police Commissioner" as having received free services from his company. These claims were properly dismissed by the OPP as baseless.
Each and every Liberal MPP named has denied any and all knowledge of the allegations. To a person they say those allegations are simply untrue.
The fact that police who examined the list said those named were not guilty of any "wrong doing" should vindicate those wrongly accused.
The NDP has chosen to repeat false claims made by an individual previously convicted of assault and uttering death threats, over the word of the police who investigated the matter.
It is a sad comment on the state of the NDP that it has chosen to wallow in the mud and smear innocent people. We call on NDP Leader Andrea Horwath to immediately apologize to the Liberal MPPs in question, and to the family of the late Jim Flaherty. Finally, she should apologize to the people of Ontario for plumbing this new low in politics.
