Ontario Police Leaders Launch 2012 Crime Prevention Campaign with Focus on Cybercrimes
TORONTO, Feb. 27, 2012 /CNW/ - Ontario's law enforcement leaders today kicked off the Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police's (OACP) annual crime prevention campaign with a focus on cybercrimes, joined by corporate sponsors in attendance to support the public awareness campaign.
The 2012 OACP Crime Prevention Campaign will provide Ontario police services with a new information booklet entitled, "Cybercrime: Victims Without Borders", which focuses on common Internet-based crimes such as on-line auction and shopping fraud, lottery e-mails, identity theft, and phishing.
"In today's technology-driven world, crime knows no borders. That's why Ontario's police leaders are committed to working with our government as well as our corporate and community partners to protect citizens from Internet-based crimes," said Deputy Chief Andrew Fletcher (Halton Regional Police Service), Chair of the OACP's Crime Prevention Committee.
To effectively combat Internet crimes, police need tools to assist in investigations and prosecutions of cyber criminals.
"Legislation such as the federal government's proposed Bill C-30 is and needs to be about crime prevention. This particular Bill would provide police with the necessary tools to investigate Internet-based crimes. It includes important safeguards, which do not exist today, that impose strict limits on who can obtain information," said OACP President Chief Matt Torigian (Waterloo Regional Police Service).
The 2012 Crime Prevention Campaign is supported by the following partners:
- Accident Support Services International Ltd.
- Allstate Insurance Company of Canada
