Ontario Science Centre leases its Strange Matter exhibition to Shanghai Science & Technology Museum

New contract opens a growth market for the Centre's touring exhibitions

TORONTO, June 11, 2014 /CNW/ - The Ontario Science Centre is pleased to announce its travelling exhibition Strange Matter will open at the Shanghai Science & Technology Museum in late July. The 510-square-metre (5,500-square-foot) interactive exhibition explores the complex world of modern materials and provides a glimpse into what the future might reveal. This marks the first time that the Ontario Science Centre has leased an exhibition to China.

Strange Matter includes more than 30 interactive experiences that delve into the world of materials science. A dynamic blend of physics, chemistry, biology and engineering, materials science studies the molecular and atomic structures of materials and how these structures can be improved or changed to create new materials. From fluids that morph, to metals with memories or microscopic machines, Strange Matter gives visitors a chance to get a closer look at the science behind every-day materials and find out how materials scientists are changing the world.  The exhibition was conceived, designed and fabricated by Ontario Science Centre, working in conjunction with leading materials scientists from across North America.

"I am delighted that our Strange Matter exhibition, developed in collaboration with the Materials Research Society, will open in Shanghai this summer. This is the first stop in what will be a multi-city tour - contracts are currently being negotiated with other Centres in China and throughout Asia," said Lesley Lewis, CEO Ontario Science Centre. "This premiere is the result of a number of years of work by the Centre to deepen its relationships in China where science centres and science museums are opening at an unprecedented rate.  By bringing its highly regarded touring exhibitions to China, the Ontario Science Centre also hopes to open new markets for its experience design, build and consulting services."

The Ontario Science Centre creates large-scale touring exhibitions that have been leased to science centres and museums around the world, including CIRCUS!, Strange Matter, Imaginate, Science in Motion, Sports Arena and FACING MARS. Strange Matter has travelled widely in Canada, the United States and Mexico since its launch at the Ontario Science Centre in 2003.
