Ontario's docs congratulate NDP Libby Davies for sodium reduction strategy
TORONTO, Nov. 6, 2012 /CNW/ - Ontario's doctors want to congratulate New Democratic Libby Davies, MP for Vancouver East on the introduction of, Bill C-460, The Sodium Reduction Strategy for Canada Act, which would aim to reduce the amount of salt/sodium in people's diet through a variety of initiatives.
In 2011, Ontario's doctors launched a public awareness campaign through information provided in doctor's offices because we know that people are consuming way too much salt. More importantly, we are all too familiar with the negative impact salt has on people's health, including high blood pressure, heart disease and increased risk of stroke.
To that end, Ontario's doctors have already called for a comprehensive salt-reduction strategy that includes: specific targets for the food industry to reduce sodium content and a public education campaign to inform Ontarians about the dangers of sodium on their health, ways to detect it in their diet and how to reduce their sodium intake.
Ontario's doctors are urging all Members of Parliament and other health professionals to support this important piece of legislation which will lead to a much healthier Canada.
