Ontario's Doctors: Let's Keep Cycling Safety Moving Forward
TORONTO, April 14, 2014 /CNW/ - Ontario's doctors congratulate the provincial Minister of Transportation, the Hon. Glenn Murray, for his leadership on cycling safety. Today, the Minister announced that cycling infrastructure will be integrated into all new roadwork projects in Ontario. Additionally, the government has announced an extra $25 million for municipalities to create cycling pilot projects and initiatives. These are significant advances that ensure cycling infrastructure is automatically included in transportation planning in Ontario.
The province recently put forward Ontario's first official cycling plan, CycleON, with the help of the Ontario Medical Association, Share the Road, the Office of the Chief Coroner, and many other provincial and municipal partners. Ontario's doctors are encouraged by these new commitments, and by the amendments to the Highway Traffic Act as laid out in Bill 173. We hope to see these funding and legislative initiatives move forward in the coming months. Making Ontario's roads safer for all road users – whether they are on foot, in a car, or on a bicycle – should be a priority for everyone. Getting physically active is good for Ontarians of all ages. Improving cycling safety will help to promote this beneficial activity.
