TORONTO, Sept. 16, 2017 /CNW/ - As revealed live on TSN and RDS, Goderich Recreation Park in Goderich, ON is the $250,000 grand prize winner of 2017 KRAFT HEINZ PROJECT PLAY. The recreation park was selected following two days of voting on Sept. 8 and 9, in which Canadians cast an impressive 766,294 votes in support of the Top 4 projects.
Now in its third year, and following six years as the Kraft Celebration Tour, KRAFT HEINZ PROJECT PLAY is a joint partnership between TSN, RDS, and Kraft Heinz to provide Canadian communities with funds for play-based infrastructure projects. This year's campaign received a record breaking 1,195 nominations from 950 communities across Canada.
The town of Goderich has a history of passionate minor sports organizations despite a major lack of amenities and basic facilities. Goderich Recreation Park is the community's main summer sports park, supporting baseball, soccer, field hockey, and skateboarding. The grand prize money will go toward bathrooms, resurfacing, a new playground, new dugouts, spectator stands, and more. These upgrades will be the first significant repairs the park has undergone in 20 years.
"Every year I'm so impressed by what can happen when a community comes together for a common cause," said Georgina Gray, Manager, Kraft Heinz Project Play. "Each of the Top 4 communities showcased true spirit and passion for sport and play, and have come together in support of their nominations. We'd like to congratulate Goderich on their Grand Prize win and look forward to helping them achieve their dream of upgrading the Goderich Recreation Park."
The three runner-up finalists, Boyd Stadium at Simplot Millenium Park (Brandon, MB), Scotia Pool (Bible Hill, NS), and Optimist Hill (Saskatoon, SK) will all receive $20,000 to support their nominated place to play.
"Goderich strongly embodies the Kraft Heinz Project Play spirit – a town that has been enriched by sport, despite limited resources to support their passion," said James Duthie, TSN Host and Kraft Heinz Project Play Ambassador. "Congratulations to the Goderich Recreation Park, and our three runner-up projects, from all of us. We commend the passionate communities who supported and championed the nominations this year."
KRAFT HEINZ PROJECT PLAY is an evolution of the Kraft Celebration Tour and has awarded $2.3 million to 73 communities across Canada. In total Kraft Heinz has supported 166 communities, contributing $6 million to Canadian play-based infrastructure projects.
