TORONTO, May 9, 2017 /CNW/ - The Ontario Principals' Council (OPC) is pleased to announce that following its executive search process and Provincial Council meeting, Allyson Otten has been selected as the new Executive Director, effective September 1, 2017. She replaces Ian McFarlane, who will be retiring this year.
Allyson has worked with and for the OPC since its inception in 1998. In 2002, she left private practice with Lerners LLP, where the OPC was her client, to become the OPC's Legal Counsel, allowing her to focus exclusively in the area of Education Law. She transitioned to the role of General Counsel in 2004, and continued to provide advice and legal support to OPC Members, as well as to OPC corporate and its affiliates over the next 12 years. In July 2016, Allyson was promoted to Associate Director.
"I am excited by the opportunity to take on the Executive Director role so that I can continue to work with this vibrant association of education leaders and our talented staff. Principals and vice-principals in Ontario schools are key to the success of our students; our mandate as an association is to support and advocate for Members so they can continue to provide exemplary leadership in public education."
Allyson is a graduate of the University of Western Ontario Law School and was called to the bar in 1996. She also earned her Bachelor of Public Administration (Hons.) from Carleton University. She has completed the Advanced Negotiations Program at Harvard University and earned her Osgoode Certificate in Labour Law.
The OPC thanks Ian McFarlane for his commitment to our organization over the past six years and wishes him well in his retirement.
The Ontario Principals' Council is the professional association representing more than 5,500 principals and vice-principals in Ontario's public elementary and secondary schools. Established in 1998, the OPC advocates on behalf of public education and provides professional supports to its Members.
