Open Letter to Elections Canada re: Government Advertising

TORONTO, July 23, 2013 /CNW/ - In an Open Letter to Elections Canada, OPC is asking for an official opinion on the issue of Government Advertising from two perspectives: (1) does the enormous amount spent on 'Canada Economic Action Plan' alone constitute 'political expenditure' on the Conservative Party's account, infringing the fairness of political financing regulations, and (2) does a direct payment from the Government to a media corporation constitute an interference in the democratic process, as media is supposed to act as an objective watchdog, reporting on government affairs.
Advertising spending ranks the Canadian Government among the largest clients of the media corporations who are arguably less inclined to criticize their profitable client. Conversely, the Government's protective actions towards the Telecom oligopoly giants who own media outlets might be the root cause of the notoriously poor and expensive Canadian telecom services.
