Operating hours extended at the Port of Montreal's MGTP and Termont terminals

To support the growth and performance of our supply chain

MONTREAL, Sept. 11, 2018 /CNW Telbec/ - CargoM, the Logistics and Transportation Metropolitan Cluster of Montreal, heralds the positive results of its partners' collaboration to establish extended terminal operating hours at the Port of Montreal following the pilot project conducted as part of Working Group 3 – Innovation and Fluidity.

With the growing number of construction zones in Greater Montreal and more time spent in traffic due to congestion, the fluidity of cargo movement was affected. It was also affected by the limited hours at the Port of Montreal's terminals.

To support the sustained growth in import and export volumes and to strengthen the Port of Montreal's position in global supply chains, the members of Working Group 3 have been working for more than a year on the project to extend terminal operating hours. 

A workshop that brought together more than 60 industry leaders, consultations and round tables led to the implementation of a pilot project from May 14 to June 22, which due to its successful results, is still in effect today.

Before the pilot project, the operating hours of the terminals were out of sync; one terminal opened at 6:00 a.m. and the other at 7:00 a.m., and the truck gates closed at 3:00 p.m. Through the pilot project, the operating hours were harmonized to 6:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Following the announcements of MGTP and Termont terminals, they will be 6:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m., providing nine more hours per day of truck access to the Port. This extension of operating hours is part of a course of action to support growth at the Port of Montreal that generates new jobs for the Maritime Employers Association (MEA), as reported in an article in La Presse on September 10.

The results of the pilot projects showed that during the extended hours, truck gate use rose about 20%, especially for trips after 3:00 p.m. The partners noted an improvement in fluidity and their operations. Terminal operators are encouraging companies to use their operating hours more frequently. Furthermore, together with the MEA, they are working on ways to deal with certain issues during the 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. window, and by doing so, ensure the fluidity of operations at all times.   

This collaborative effort by all our members is part of the vision to strengthen our competitiveness against North American competition and to position Greater Montreal as an indispensable hub in global supply chains.
