OPP Release Operation Impact 2012 Results

AURORA, ON, Oct. 9, 2012 /CNW/ - The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) reported that eight people lost their lives in five separate motor vehicle collisions on Ontario roads and one person was killed in an off-road vehicle incident over the Thanksgiving long weekend.  Sadly, a total of four people died in one collision alone.

Over the weekend, the OPP took part in Operation Impact, a national initiative aimed to improve road safety, save lives and reduce serious injuries through increased awareness and compliance with traffic safety laws.

The OPP targeted speeding, aggressive driving, distracted driving and occupant restraint during the campaign, with officers laying more than 11,700 charges relating to these four main causal factors in road fatalities.

These latest statistics bring the total number of deaths on our roads in 2012 (in OPP jurisdiction) to 269, compared to 225 by the same time last year (2011) - a 19.6 per cent increase.

The OPP continues to work with its police partners across Canada in an effort to increase public compliance with safe driving measures and ultimately, to save lives while making Canada's highways the safest in the world.
