OPSEU faculty countdown to strike deadline at Algoma University
SAULT STE. MARIE, ON, April 9, 2018 /CNW/ - Faculty at Algoma University, represented by the Ontario Public Service Employees Union (OPSEU) hope for success during mediation as they get closer to an April 13 strike deadline.
Mediation is set for Tuesday, April 10, however faculty remain concerned that Algoma University will not come to the table intending to bargain.
The OPSEU bargaining team chair, Pelham Matthews, said he has a hard time trusting the good intentions of the employer.
"Algoma University has dragged their feet for 22 months, avoiding substantive issues at the bargaining table such as fair wages. The faculty offered a full proposal in 2016. We have been ready to bargain this whole time, and now there is not a lot of time left."
Algoma University currently pays its faculty less than most universities in Ontario.
Algoma University faculty will be meeting to put together their picket signs on Tuesday, April 10, in case strike action is necessary. "We are ready to do what is required to make the employer realize it's time to bargain," said Matthews.
OPSEU President Warren (Smokey) Thomas said Algoma University must get its priorities straight.
"It's time for this employer to stop playing games, and start treating its faculty with respect. Our members have been more than patient, but we're not going to let this employer walk all over us. My message to Algoma management is start negotiating honestly."
OPSEU Local 685 represents 60 full-time faculty at Algoma University.
