Option consommateurs urges the speedy adoption by Parliament of Bill C-36 The
Consumer Product Safety Act
OTTAWA, Oct 7 /CNW Telbec/ - Option consommateurs urges Parliament to pass the Consumer Product Safety Bill C-36, which was brought to the floor of the House of Commons this afternoon. An earlier version of the bill had had the support of all parties in the House of Commons.
The current legislation, the Hazardous Products Act, does not allow the Government of Canada to protect consumers and children by issuing mandatory recalls of unsafe products . Passage of Bill C-36 will enable the government to issue timely and mandatory recalls of products deemed unsafe in a timely manner. It will also make it possible to require manufacturers to provide test results or studies, to increase the frequency of inspections and the number of mandatory recalls of unsafe products.
"Bill C-36 is crucial for the safety and well-being of all Canadians," says Anu Bose, Head of the Ottawa office of Option consommateurs. It will bring the laws of Canada into line with those of her principal trading partners, namely the United States and the European Union. If the law is not passed, Canada will be seen as a dumping ground for dangerous products by unscrupulous, importers, manufacturers and suppliers.
