MISSISSAUGA, ON, May 31, 2013 /CNW/ - Ornge, Ontario's provider of air ambulance and related services, confirms there has been an accident involving one of its air ambulance helicopters. The Sikorsky S76 helicopter departed from its Moosonee base en route to Attawapiskat at approximately 12:00 am on May 31st, 2013. Contact was lost with the aircraft shortly after takeoff. Four people were on board the aircraft: two pilots and two paramedics. No patients were on board the aircraft. Ornge has notified family members of the people on board.
The Joint Rescue Coordination Centre at CFB Trenton was contacted and a search and rescue aircraft was sent to the Moosonee area. The helicopter has been spotted by search and rescue and they are presently making efforts to reach the aircraft. No further information is available regarding the status of the crew members on board, or the aircraft.
The Transportation Safety Board of Canada has been notified and will be investigating. Ornge will release further information as it becomes available. Updated information will also be posted on Ornge's website: www.ornge.ca.
