MISSISSAUGA, ON, June 26, 2012 /CNW/ - Today, after years of development, Orville Redenbacher's gourmet popcorn is perfectly popped and ready to grab on the go with the launch of four new mouthwatering, ready to eat flavours. The top name in popcorn has introduced:
"Orville Redenbacher spent decades testing 30 thousand different types of corn before he settled on the one that made the perfect popcorn back in 1965," says Annabelle Nogueira, Senior Brand Manager for Orville Redenbacher Canada. "Today people want a snack they can grab and enjoy on the go. They want full flavor and variety. Orville Redenbacher ready to eat gourmet popcorn will satisfy any snack craving, and as Orville always said, you'll like it better, or our name isn't Orville Redenbacher."
According to the NDP Group National Eating Trends Survey from 2011, snacking in the morning and afternoon is on the rise. Carried-from-home snacks are the driving force behind overall Canadian growth in snacking with an increase of 266 per cent since the year 2000.1 When snacking at home, ready to eat popcorn is the top growing snack food with a 42 per cent increase over five years.2 Through these findings Orville saw the need for a grab and go snack that can be enjoyed wherever hunger hits.
Orville's ready to eat popcorn adds the tangy taste of dill, the zesty spice of chipotle, the sweet and savoury decadence of kettle corn and the sharp bite of white cheddar to the iconic popcorn brand's list of innovative products. Packed with flavour and perfect for eating at home, in the car, at work or on the go, new Orville Redenbacher ready to eat gourmet popcorn is available now at grocery stores nationwide.
A Kernel in Time - A Brief History of the Brand
"You'll like it better or my name isn't Orville Redenbacher." That's the promise Orville made more than 40 years ago—and the same promise the brand stands by today. Popcorn hadn't changed much in five-thousand years until Redenbacher and his business partner Charlie Bowman came along. They spent decades breeding more than 30 thousand hybrids to find that perfect pop. ConAgra continues this tradition today by developing hybrids in 10,000 acres of company-owned farms every year.
Originally named Red-Bow, their new breed of popping corn was sold out the back of a station wagon to stores across Indiana until they decided to consult with a marketing firm based in Chicago. "They came up with the same name my mother did for free," laughed Orville Redenbacher years later.
Orville Redenbacher was born on a farm in Indiana in 1907. His love of popcorn started early as he raised and sold popcorn in the 1920's while he was in grade school. After studying agriculture at Purdue University in the 1930's and teaching high school, he devoted himself to making the perfect popcorn.
The Redenbacher-Bowman variety expands to about forty times its volume, making it lighter and fluffier. It also leaves fewer unpopped kernels, which Redenbacher called "the shy ones."
