ORILLIA, ON, June 17, 2015 /CNW/ - There's a new alternative for filling drug prescriptions in Orillia and Orillia Soldiers' Memorial Hospital (OSMH) is the first hospital in Canada to introduce the technology through an innovative partnership with NuVision Health Inc. Effective June 17, 2015, a remote dispensing system called the NuVision Health MedCenter™ will be available to patients and the community 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year in the waiting room of the OSMH Emergency Department.
The MedCenter™ (a MedAvail product) dispenses prescription and non-prescription drugs through an ATM-style kiosk that provides live contact with a pharmacist via secure audio and video link. The MedCenter™ accepts all prescription insurance carriers that any pharmacy would accept, and processes payments (if required) via debit or credit card. The medication is dispensed directly from the MedCenter™ once the transaction is complete, along with all of the printed drug information and receipts.
"It brings convenience to a new level," said Pat Campbell, OSMH President and CEO. "Many hospital ER visits are followed by an immediate trip to a pharmacy to fill a prescription. This technology allows patients to fill their prescription before leaving the hospital, and it has the added benefit of being accessible any time of the day or night, something not always available in Orillia."
The technology was first introduced in October 2014 at Mercy Hospital and Medical Center in Chicago, IL and, "we're excited to bring it to Canadian hospitals starting with Orillia Soldiers' Memorial Hospital here in Orillia," said Kate Samaratunga, CEO of NuVision Health.
"Time is important to people, especially when they're ill. Delivering medication in a trusted, safe and secure method is one way we can help individuals live better lives."
