Outlet-center specialists Lisa Wagner and David Hinkle join Avison Young
Partners of the Outlet Resource Group become Principals at Avison Young
ATLANTA, GA, May 15, 2014 /CNW/ - Steve Dils, Avison Young Principal and Managing Director of the company's Atlanta office, announced today that highly regarded retail outlet-center specialists Lisa Quier Wagner and David Hinkle have joined Avison Young.
Effective immediately, Wagner and Hinkle join Avison Young as Principals and will focus on their specialty of outlet-center strategic direction, marketing and management, as well as provide leasing guidance and tenant advisory expertise.
Wagner and Hinkle bring 50 years of combined commercial real estate experience to Avison Young. They most recently served as partners of the Outlet Resource Group, a specialty retail consultancy firm which they co-owned and co-founded.
"I am extremely pleased that Lisa and David, two leading outlet-center experts, have chosen to join Avison Young," comments Dils. "They fit perfectly into our Principal-led culture, and both are highly respected in the outlet-center sector as a result of their many years of ongoing, distinguished service."
He continues: "With their appointment, Avison Young will be one of the first full-service real estate companies to provide best-in-class strategic-development direction, marketing, management, and leasing and tenant representation guidance specific to the outlet-center asset class. This is the first time that any independent outlet-center specialists have aligned with an international real estate firm, creating a resource-rich, multi-faceted team. By bringing David and Lisa on board, Avison Young is providing more value-added services to clients in the retail marketplace – and creating another platform from which we can serve clients in the United States, Canada and overseas."
Wagner brings to Avison Young 25 years of experience in outlet-center marketing, feasibility assessment and strategic development, and oversight of outlet-center performance. During her career, she has overseen the grand openings of more than 45 outlet centers, and coordinated the marketing of more than 60 such retail facilities globally. One of her focal points has been the turnaround of underperforming assets and repositioning of hybrid projects into pure outlet centers through a strategic, multi-disciplinary team approach. Her skill set includes strategies for outlet-center development and management roles, the identification of optimal sites, and the creation and deployment of business plans to maximize asset value.
Prior to forming the Outlet Resource Group, Wagner was a partner with EWB Development LLC, focusing on outlet-center development and turnaround projects across North America, while handling marketing projects through her pre-existing consultancy firm, QTM, Inc. She started in the outlet-center segment in 1988 as Vice-President and Director of Marketing for McArthur Glen Group in Washington, DC, actively participating in the company's development program and creating and executing marketing programs for a company portfolio that grew to 22 outlet centers. She went on to develop and open centers in Germany, Scotland, Sweden and France, both with McArthur Glen Europe and then as a founding partner in London-based Outlet Centers International. Since returning to North America in 2001, she has been involved in the development and redevelopment of dozens of outlet projects.
Wagner is a frequent speaker at the International Council of Shopping Centers (ICSC) and other conferences in the U.S. and abroad, and acts as a spokesperson for the industry as the Chair of the Outlet Marketing Alliance, which represents both developers and retailers.
"I look forward to bringing our unique view of the retail world to Avison Young, and building upon the foundation of best-in-class service with the outlet clients we established at the Outlet Resource Group," states Wagner. "I'm thrilled be part of the firm's Principal-led ownership group and to be joining such an innovative and collaborative company – one that truly puts its clients first. David and I are excited about the many opportunities that we can provide outlet-center clients while drawing from the vast array of knowledge and expertise available from our new Avison Young colleagues."
She adds: "Outlet-center real estate development is a growing trend that extends well beyond the United States, and it's great to know that I can enhance our clients' retail expansion efforts in North America. Furthermore, when acting on behalf of businesses that operate in different states and countries, I can draw from the large support network provided by other Avison Young offices. This support network will be vital to the development of our retail advisory group, and ensure that we provide state-of-the-art outlet-center services to clients."
Hinkle has 23 years of outlet and retail experience. Prior to launching the Outlet Resource Group, he worked with Wagner at EWB and, prior to that, spent 17 years as President and CEO of National Book Warehouse, Inc. (NBW), where he established the company's real estate department. He also helped pioneer the specialty retail segment of the business and oversaw all leasing, construction and lease administration for NBW's permanent store base, which he helped to expand dramatically. During his tenure at NBW, Hinkle leased in excess of 7 million square feet of retail space in 42 States. He also successfully executed a leveraged buyout of the New York-based company in 2001, having just led a turnaround of the previous owner's multiple business interests, which were insolvent at the time.
After Hinkle and his management team assumed control of the operation, NBW grew to 185 stores and, at its peak, ranked fourth among all U.S. booksellers. Hinkle also has extensive experience working with media throughout the U.S. and is published regularly in trade publications. He is a Past Co-Chair of the Outlet Retail Manufacturers Association (ORMA), an industry trade group. He is an active member of ICSC and has earned its SCLS designations. In addition, he participates regularly as a speaker and moderator at national and regional real estate conferences conducted by ICSC, Urban Land Institute and other organizations.
"Lisa and I are excited about the opportunity to work with Steve Dils and our new colleagues across the company at Avison Young," notes Hinkle. "I am looking forward to working with the high-caliber professionals at Avison Young, and being part of the company's client-centric culture. I'm also delighted, as a Principal, to continue to have an ownership position in a fast-growing and international commercial real estate company – and to have another opportunity to contribute to my firm's growth on a national and international scale. On that note, Lisa and I are thrilled to be part of Avison Young's aggressive U.S. and global expansion program."
"Avison Young takes a different approach, fostering relationships based on partnership, and our commitment is to bring this to life by adding value and our experience in the outlet space to Avison Young's retail-services platform," he says.
Dils is also pleased to announce that, effective immediately, Jacquelin Young joins Avison Young as a marketing implementor working with Wagner. Young has 20 years of experience in shopping center and outlet marketing and management, and will apply that marketing expertise to the team's outlet-center clients.
