OWA Releases Results of Opinion Polling
PETERBOROUGH, ON, May 7, 2018 /CNW/ - As the province prepares for the next election in June, the Ontario Waterpower Association (OWA) has released the results of recent opinion polling to provide insight on the public's views on electricity issues broadly, and waterpower specifically.
"The results of this polling are truly remarkable", said Paul Norris, President of the Ontario Waterpower Association. "More than ninety percent (90%) of respondents indicated their support for waterpower, with reliability, the creation of local jobs and environmental performance being the most valued attributes."
The OWA engaged Innovative Research Group to better understand attitudes towards waterpower among Ontarians. The survey was conducted by telephone among a representative sample of 1,001 Ontarians, 18 years or older and is considered accurate +/-4% 19 times out of 20.Three northern regions as well as Eastern Ontario were oversampled in order to increase the confidence in analysis at the regional level. As illustrated below, across all regions of the province and all political party affiliations, there is overwhelming support for waterpower. Additional results are available HERE.
"Despite the widespread perception that Ontario has too much electricity, the reality is that, as early as 2024, the province will face a shortfall due in large part to the retirement of nuclear assets," added Norris. "When given a choice among options, the public strongly supports the expansion of waterpower to meet future needs."
The OWA was founded in 2001 to represent the common and collective interests of the province's original green energy sector – waterpower. More than 160 members are committed to advancing responsible resource management and sustainable development. www.owa.ca.
