Pan American Silver reports on government briefing held in Chubut, Argentina
VANCOUVER, June 20, 2012 /CNW/ - Pan American Silver Corp. (PAAS: NASDAQ) (PAA: TSX) ("Pan American" or the "Company") confirms that yesterday a formal public presentation was given by the Governor of the province of Chubut, Martin Buzzi, the provincial Minister of Petroleum and the Director of Petrominera (the provincially owned mining company) on pending legislation that would directly impact the regulatory regime for mining in the province, where the Company's Navidad silver project is located.
The presentation provided an overview of a proposed new regulatory framework that would be applied to future petroleum and mining projects in Chubut, including labor practices, environmental compliance, community consultation, increased provincial royalties, the potential for participation by Petrominera, and areas within the province where open pit mining would be allowed including where the Navidad project is located.
The Company expects that a detailed regulatory document will be formally presented to the Chubut legislature within the coming days, at which time Pan American will be able to review the precise details of these regulatory proposals and evaluate their impact on the Navidad project.
The Company can provide no assurance whether the proposals discussed yesterday will be presented to the Chubut legislature, enacted as law in Chubut or whether the proposals will be subject to amendment by the Chubut legislature.
Pan American remains committed to the safe, environmentally sensitive development of this world class silver deposit, while taking into careful consideration the challenges facing new investments in Argentina today.
