Parliamentary Secretary Pierre Lemieux Marks Upcoming Veterans' Week with Annual Remembrance Day Ceremony in Casselman Français
CASSELMAN, ON, Nov. 4, 2012 /CNW/ - Canadians across the country are taking time to remember and honour our Veterans during Veterans' Week 2012, from November 5 to 11. Today, on behalf of the Honourable Steven Blaney, Minister of Veterans Affairs, Pierre Lemieux, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Agriculture and Member of Parliament for Glengarry-Prescott-Russell, remembered at the Annual Remembrance Day Ceremony in Casselman.
"Veterans' Week is a time when Canadians honour those who have sacrificed to defend Canada's values of freedom and democracy," said Minister Blaney. "They have earned the recognition of all Canadians. We must remember all Canadian Veterans and continue to honour those who serve today."
This year marks significant historical military milestones with the 95th anniversary of the Battle of Vimy Ridge, the 95th anniversary of the Battle of Passchendaele and the 70th anniversary of the Dieppe Raid. Each year, from November 5 to 11, Canadians join together to celebrate Veterans' Week.
"During Veterans' Week, we pay tribute to all Canadian Veterans and we honour those who serve our country today," said PS Lemieux. "Our Government is committed to commemorating the sacrifices and achievements of the brave Canadians whose legacy is the peace and security we continue to enjoy as Canadians."
Today's event included a parade to the cenotaph, a traditional remembrance day service, speeches from local dignitaries, a wreath-laying ceremony and a special tribute to all men and women in uniform who lost their lives in Afghanistan. Following the event a short reception was held at the J.R. Brisson Complex.
