Patient Care Top of Mind for Medical Laboratory Professionals

In Celebration of National Medical Laboratory Week April 20-26^th

TORONTO, April 25, 2014 /CNW/ - Patients rely on physicians for their health diagnoses and treatments, not realizing the often invisible support medical laboratory professionals provide. This National Medical Laboratory Week (April 20 - 26), the Ontario Association of Medical Laboratories (OAML) is proud to highlight the work of medical laboratory professionals whose first priority is better patient care.

More than 7,700 medical laboratory technologists (MLTs) perform nearly half a million lab tests in Ontario each day. These regulated health professionals work alongside microbiologists, chemists, other scientists and laboratory physicians as well as committed support staff in specimen collection centres and laboratories to perform the tests that are critical to the health of Ontarians. Here are just a few examples of what motivates employees in OAML member companies.

			"I really enjoy working as a Medical Laboratory Technologist as it allows me to be part of the entire health care team. It is fulfilling knowing that the work that I provide daily contributes to the diagnosis, treatment and overall well-being of our patients. Keeping patient care in mind at all times helps me to always strive to do the best work that I can do," said Ada Cea, MLT at Medical Laboratories of Windsor.
			"Working with patients is what always puts a smile on my face," says Gail Davies, Medical Lab Technician at OAML member, LifeLabs Medical Laboratory Services in Timmins, Ontario. "I enjoy coming in to work to have that one-on-one time with each patient, and to inspire confidence in what we do for their health."
			"As a lab professional, providing the best patient care possible is my biggest motivation," said Vaishali Pater, Laboratory Technologist, Histology at Gamma-Dynacare in Brampton, Ontario. "I take pride, ownership and great satisfaction in delivering high quality and timely results, even if it means going above and beyond my regular duties."

The OAML was established in 1978 as the voice of Ontario's community medical laboratory sector. OAML member laboratories provide 95% of all diagnostic testing for patients outside of hospitals. The Association is composed of 6 members that operate 24 accredited testing facilities and 329 licensed specimen collection centres across Ontario.
