Company's founder named to the Order of Canada for business and community leadership

OAKVILLE, ON, Jan. 24, 2017 /CNW/ - Pelmorex Media Inc. is proud to acknowledge the achievements of Pierre L. Morrissette who was named to the Order of Canada on December 30^th, 2016. The honour affirms Mr. Morrissette's business leadership as Founder, Chairman, President and CEO of Pelmorex Media Inc., the parent company of The Weather Network and MétéoMédia, which provides weather information to millions of Canadians. Established in 1967 by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the Order of Canada is the cornerstone of the Canadian Honours System, and recognizes outstanding achievement, dedication to the community and service to the nation.

Mr. Morrissette began his career with the Royal Bank of Canada in 1972 and has held senior roles with Telemedia Communications Inc. (CFO 1977-1983) and Canadian Satellite Communications Inc. (Cancom) (CEO 1983-1989) before founding Pelmorex Media Inc. in 1989.  His entrepreneurial spirit has led the company to be the undisputed leader in the weather information services category in Canada. Pelmorex Media Inc. is also the parent company to Spain's leading weather provider, Eltiempo.es and continues to expand internationally with a focus on US, Europe, LATAM, India and Australia.

Shortly after acquiring The Weather Network & MétéoMédia, Pelmorex Media committed itself to public safety alerting for Canadians. Today, the company operates Canada's National Alert Aggregation Dissemination system known as Alert Ready, which is designed to deliver critical and potentially life-saving alerts to Canadians through TV and radio. The Alert Ready system was developed by Pelmorex Media Inc. in partnership with federal, provincial and territorial emergency management officials, Environment Canada and the broadcast industry.

Throughout his business career, Mr. Morrissette has been a strong advocate for the next generation of entrepreneurs. He is a member of the Ivey Business School Advisory Board and in 2007, the Pierre L. Morrissette Institute for Entrepreneurship was named in his honour. The institute is Canada's leading centre for entrepreneurship research and education. In 2006, he was inducted into the Canadian Association of Broadcasters Hall of Fame for his contribution to the industry and community.  

In the area of philanthropy, Mr. Morrissette is especially committed to mental wellness among children and adolescents. He is the founder and a trustee of the Pierre L. Morrissette Family Foundation and the Mental Wellness Network Foundation which support Family Navigation programs offered by the Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital and the Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre. These programs have been designed to assist children, adolescents and their families navigate through the mental health and addictions system.

Mr. Morrissette's entrepreneurial and community spirit has been lifelong and continues to be demonstrated through his commitment to the community at large.
