Peter Munk Announces $1 Million Donation to the Alberta Fires and Emergency Appeal
TORONTO, May 6, 2016 /CNW/ - Canadian business leader and philanthropist, Peter Munk, is personally donating $1 million to the Alberta Fires Emergency Appeal of the Canadian Red Cross. The funds will be used to assist thousands of Canadian families displaced and homeless because of recent wildfires around Fort McMurray, Alberta.
"This is a Canadian crisis, not just an Alberta or a western crisis," said Mr. Munk. "Helping one another in such times of need is part of our tradition and it is core to our values as Canadians."
"On many occasions we have seen Albertans help other Canadians and serve Canada. Now it is our turn and, in adversity, we must remember the spirit that unites us as a country."
He commended the federal government and the Government of Alberta for their respective commitment to match personal donations to the Red Cross. Mr. Munk also encouraged all Canadians to do what they can for the residents of Fort McMurray now and in the months of re-building that lie ahead.
"Watching the events unfold in northern Alberta, reminded me of my own past as a refugee," said Mr. Munk. "I know what it is to lose everything. And I know how important it is to help others in such circumstances. I was welcomed to Canada and given opportunities for which I have been grateful my entire life."
