New book paints clear picture on how to solve disengagement in the workplace and overcome looming talent crisis
MONTREAL, Nov. 24, 2015 /CNW Telbec/ - Experts in the fields of Employee Recognition and Engagement, Peter Hart and David Zinger, have teamed up to publish a new book that will help business leaders overcome two of the greatest challenges facing companies today – disengagement of personnel and a workforce crisis that is spreading across the globe, and getting worse.

People Artists: Drawing Out the Best in Others at Work offers practical advice and inspirational stories to help managers become true "People Artists" – leaders who understand that their companies (or teams) are blank canvases and their employees are the vibrant colour that ultimately leads to professional fulfilment for both manager and employee and success for the business.
"We desperately need People Artists – at work and throughout society," said Zinger. "Too many of us linger in a state of inhibition and self-doubt, especially when it comes to leading teams, and this leads to mediocrity.
"The truth is we all have the tools to draw the best out of others. We have a heart to care, ears to listen, eyes to see, lips to express and hands to give. When we give in these powerful domains, we move beyond ourselves and are able to draw out the very best that's in each one of us. And that's critical to success in business and in the life of a team leader."
The theme of employee recognition and engagement is likely one of the most important concepts for corporate survival and leadership in future decades. With disengaged and disheartened employees in abundance and increasingly fewer workers in most sectors and regions, it's a critically important topic of interest to all business leaders.
A recent Workforce Mood Tracker survey found that 69 per cent of employees would work harder if they were better recognized; 78 per cent said being recognized motivates them in their job; and 49 per cent said they would leave their current job for a company that clearly recognized employees for their efforts and contributions.
These figures support the fundamental premise of People Artistry and the work of Hart and Zinger: it's extremely costly to lose personnel especially when there is an ongoing talent crisis in most industrialized nations.
To explain their revolutionary principle, Hart and Zinger have created the People Artistry Palette, a powerful yet simple tool that also forms the basis of Vistance Learning, the online management development program for getting recognition right launched by Hart and his team at Rideau Recognition Solutions.
At the core of the palette is the goal of the exercise – to draw out the best in people. The first ring is based on five parts of the body: heart, ears, eyes, lips and hands. The second ring indicates the function of each of the tools: the heart cares, the ears listen, the eyes see, the lips speak, the hands give.
The final and outer ring is based on the five scientifically validated domains used by Rideau's Vistance Learning: Praiseworthy Actions, Acknowledging Intent, Recognition Talking, Appreciative Listening and Rewarding Giving.
"The concept of People Artistry, which is at the core of this book and Vistance, is the culmination of the insights gained throughout my career," said Hart. "I am convinced it will have a transformative effect on the success of every business, every team and, even more importantly, every person."
As part of the book, the authors share stories and insights from 37 People Artists from around the world, including Don Macpherson, president of Modern Survey, Rosa Say, a management educator from Hawaii, Larissa Thurlow and Kelly Saretsky from the Institutional Research and Planning at the College of North Atlantic in Doha, Qatar and Henry Mintzberg, a McGill University professor and one of the world's leading management writers and educators.
