GRANDE PRAIRIE, AB, May 18, 2016 /CNW/ - The Philip J Currie Dinosaur Museum has just been recognized by Conde Nast Traveler as one of the biggest 2015-16 museum openings in the world – in the company of such famous institutions as San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA) and the Tate Modern in London – and the only one in Canada. The dinosaur museum was chosen for its structure and for its location next to one of the densest dinosaur bone beds in the world. This recognition follows on the heels of several awards (8 in 8 months) for innovation, design, civic reach, engineering, architecture, leadership and outstanding exhibit experience, among others.
The museum design draws on an abstraction of the palaeontological excavation experience and interior displays use augmented reality platforms and fractal screens to bring to life animated dinosaurs placed in interactive ecosystems akin to "chase" scene coursing through galleries that descend into the earth, representing a 360 million year journey.
The museum aims to increase the awareness and accessibility of the world of dinosaurs through educational programs, including onsite programs for children of all ages, summer dinosaur bone bed tours, helicopter tours to more remote fossil sites, distance education, and lecture series.
The museum is located within a few kilometers of one of the densest dinosaur bone beds in the world, from which finds will continue to enrich our understanding of these prehistoric creatures for many years to come. Visitors can learn more through tours to the bone beds by museum Dinobus or by helicopter flights.
