SOCHI, Russia, March 15, 2014 /CNW/ - Saturday competition was highlighted by skiers Mac Marcoux and guide Robin Fémy capturing gold in the men's giant slalom visually impaired division, adding to the two bronze medals they won earlier in the Games. Competition in team sports wrapped up today, with the Canadian sledge hockey team winning bronze and the wheelchair curling team winning gold.
What Canada Did Saturday at the Sochi 2014 Paralympic Games:
PARA-NORDIC SKIING
In the 4x2.5km mixed relay, Sébastien Fortier (Quebec City, Que.), Robbi Weldon (Thunder Bay, Ont.) and Margarita Gorbounova (Ottawa, Ont.) did not finish. In the 4x2.5km open relay, Chris Klebl (Canmore, Alta.), along with Brian McKeever (Canmore, Alta.) and his guides of Erik Carleton (Canmore, Alta.) and Graham Nishikawa (Whitehorse) placed fourth in the open 4x2.5km relay with a time of 25:51.9. McKeever and company will look to win their third gold medal of the week on Sunday when they hit the start line for the final Nordic race of the 2014 Games.
WHEELCHAIR CURLING
Canada defeated China 5-4 in the semifinals and then went on to defeat Russia 8-3 in the final match to win the gold medal.
PARA-ALPINE SKIING
Saturday competition was highlighted by skiers Mac Marcoux and guide Robin Fémy capturing gold in the men's giant slalom visually impaired division, adding to the two bronze medals they won earlier in the Games. Canada's men's sit-skiers didn't fare well in the giant slalom, with Josh Dueck, of Kimberley, B.C., Caleb Brousseau, from Terrace, B.C., and Calgary, Alta.'s Kurt Oatway all not finishing their first runs. Standing skier Kirk Schornstein, of Spruce Grove, Alta. finished 13th (2:40.97). The final alpine event of the Sochi Paralympic Winter Games is women's giant slalom on Sunday. Canada's para-alpine team has already won eight medals in Sochi, including two gold.
SLEDGE HOCKEY
Canada's sledge team won the bronze medal after a 3-0 win over Norway. Billy Bridges (Summerside, P.E.I.) led the way with a pair of goals, while Brad Bowden (Orton, Ont.) also scored for Canada.
