HAMILTON, ON, Oct. 20 /CNW/ - The Royal Canadian Mounted Police is seeking the public's assistance locating five wanted individuals alleged to be involved in a large human trafficking ring. These wanted individuals are still believed to be in the Hamilton area.
On October 8th, 2010 investigators from the RCMP Hamilton Niagara Regional Detachment Immigration and Passport Section reported on a Human Trafficking ring operating in the Hamilton area. This was a joint RCMP and Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) investigation, dubbed "Project OPAPA". To date, 19 victims all from Hungary have been identified and the investigation is still ongoing.
The investigators are alleging that the victims were recruited from their home in Hungary to work for their traffickers in the construction industry in the region. However, they learned of their fate after arriving in Hamilton where they were coached to file false Refugee Claims as well as social assistance. These social benefits were eventually stolen by the traffickers. They were also forced to work without pay.
