Porn literacy: A key ingredient in sex education for today's youth
Planned Parenthood Toronto hosts Dr. Marty Klein talk on "Porn Literacy: Helping Youth Develop Sexual Intelligence"
TORONTO, March 5, 2013 /CNW/ - Parents, educators and health professionals alike often find sexuality a challenging part of parenting or working with youth. The latest complication in sexuality education is the wide-spread availability of internet porn and the corresponding need to help youth make sense of what they may see.
On March 7th, Planned Parenthood Toronto will open up this much-needed conversation by hosting California-based Sex Therapist & Marriage Counselor Dr. Marty Klein to present an informative, enjoyable, down-to-earth talk which will address common concerns, including:
- How much do young people look at internet porn?
- How does it affect them?
- What do youth (and all of us) need to know about porn?
- When—and how—should I start raising this issue with my children or the youth I work with?
- How can I best support young people in my life in figuring out the sexual attitudes and behaviours that work for them?
Dr. Klein will share reassuring information and valuable tools to help parents, educators and health professionals help youth deal with today's technology. He'll also discuss what he calls society's "PornPanic," and show why today's youth are actually safer than we may imagine.
"At Planned Parenthood Toronto, we think it's essential for youth to have access to accurate information about sex", said Sarah Hobbs-Blyth, Executive Director, "We know from the youth we serve that porn is one of the ways some youth learn about sex, so it's important to be able to talk with them about what porn is and what it isn't and to help youth understand how it may differ from real life sexual experiences."
This free public event will take place at the Ramada Plaza Toronto, 300 Jarvis Street, on Thursday March 7th starting at 7:00pm.
