Port Metro Vancouver Applauds BC Government Initiative Supporting Critical Gateway Infrastructure

VANCOUVER, Sept. 28, 2012 /CNW/ - Port Metro Vancouver applauds the BC Government's announcement today at the 2012 Union of British Columbia Municipalities convention, that the provincial government has begun planning for the replacement of the George Massey Tunnel (GMT).

Port Metro Vancouver has been encouraging the BC Government to take action to address the long standing concern that the GMT presents a barrier to continued growth in the Fraser River terminals, in particular to Fraser Surrey Docks.  The single biggest challenge that the GMT represents to ocean going vessels is related to ship 'draft', the depth of water required in order for those vessels to transit the Fraser River.

"The BC Government's new commitment to replace the GMT sends a strong message that this Port and this province are open for business and ready to seize opportunities resulting from continued growth in Asian economies," said Robin Silvester, President and Chief Executive Officer, Port Metro Vancouver. "A modernized crossing will further expand trade opportunities for the Fraser River terminals, like Fraser Surrey Docks, well into the future, which in turn supports a strong economy and good local jobs for many years to come."

In addition to supporting continued growth in the Vancouver Gateway, the GMT represents a primary north/south corridor with the busy nearby international border crossing linking the United States and Metro Vancouver. The renewal of the crossing will also support benefits to communities in the Lower Mainland by easing congestion.

Port Metro Vancouver continually seeks ways to mitigate traffic impacts on communities and the proposed replacement of the GMT would contribute significantly towards this objective. Port Metro Vancouver looks forward to participating in the upcoming consultation process and working collaboratively with partners as this exciting project progresses.
