Infogroup raises a glass to top cities for wine retailers and wineries
OMAHA, Neb., May 24, 2017 /CNW/ -- Wine enthusiasts looking to celebrate National Wine Day on May 25 should look no further than Portland, Ore., according to data from leading business data and analytics provider Infogroup.
To determine the top U.S. cities for wine lovers, Infogroup used its verified business database of more than 15 million records to identify which metro areas are home to the most wine retailers and wineries. Once these factors were compiled, Metropolitan Statistical Areas (MSAs) with a population of 1 million or more were ranked by their concentration of wine-related businesses per 10,000 residents.
Using these indicators, Infogroup ranked the following as the top 10 wine cities:
Not surprisingly, cities in the Pacific Northwest top Infogroup's list. With 1.545 wine-related businesses per 10K residents, Portland proved the most favorable U.S. city for wine lovers, with San Francisco ranking second with 0.73 per 10K residents. Known for its wine country, California boasts three cities on Infogroup's list.
Total U.S. wine sales (including imports) approached $60 billion in 2016, up 4 percent from 2015. Additionally, 2016 marks the 24th consecutive year of growth for U.S. wine sales.

If the owner of a winery in northern California is hoping to open a new location this year, our data reveals that they might also find success in less obvious wine cities like Hartford or Cincinnati."
In a previous study, Infogroup also analyzed the top cities for beer. According to Infogroup business data, wine mecca Portland also topped the list for beer-related businesses among the largest metro areas.
