Portlands Energy Centre Seeks More Members for New Community Ecological Committee
TORONTO, March 4, 2014 /CNW/ - After many engaging years, the Portlands Energy Centre (PEC), a natural gas-fired power plant, is merging its two dedicated volunteer committees to form the Community Ecological Committee (CEC) and is seeking new members.
The new group combines PEC's Community Liaison Committee and Ecological Sustainability Committee to continue the plant's mandate to collaborate with its community and enhance its ecosystem footprint. Legacy committee members include university/college researchers, community members, sustainability advocates and government representatives.
The newly formed CEC will provide an ongoing forum for PEC's management and the broader community to discuss local, operational and ecological matters, exchange best practices and contribute to shared solutions.
"We believe that working with a volunteer committee of like-minded members helps us make the best and most informed decisions that affect our community and the overall environment," says Curtis Mahoney, General Manager, Portlands Energy Centre.
To foster fresh insights that advance its ecological strategy and work with the community to improve quality of life, PEC is also seeking new committee members from the community, academic institutions and the environmental sector. For a few hours a year, volunteer members can play a role in identifying solutions that improve the community and our overall environment. The CEC will build on the previous committees' efforts, which include diverse initiatives, such as: revitalizing the plant's brownfield site through ecosystem restoration, collaborating with post-secondary students on research initiatives and establishing an urban aviary to help pollinate nearby gardens and Tommy Thompson Park.
