TORONTO, June 18, 2015 /CNW/ - PortsToronto today announced the shortlist of films that will be put to a public vote to determine the movie line-up for the 5th annual Sail-In Cinema movie festival being held August 20 to 22 at Sugar Beach. Voting is now open at www.sailincinema.com, with this year's theme and movies "flashing back to the 80s" to celebrate an era of big hair, Atari game consoles, Cabbage Patch Kids, Tretorns and iconic films.
Sail-In Cinema – Toronto's only outdoor floating film event – offers boaters and landlubbers alike the unique opportunity to watch movies from land or water on one of North America's largest screens, erected on a custom barge anchored in Toronto's harbour.
"As a community-based event, Sail-In Cinema offers the public the final say as to which films are screened each summer," said Deborah Wilson, Vice President, Communications and Public Affairs, PortsToronto. "Last year, a record-breaking 4,900 votes were cast to determine the final film line-up – representing a fourfold increase over the previous year. This year, with so many memorable and iconic movies to choose from under our festival theme of Flashback to the 80s, voting will be more important than ever before. Whether it's a cult classic like NeverEnding Story, a John Hughes staple like Uncle Buck, or a family favourite like The Goonies, we can't wait to see what the public chooses for this year's line-up, and look forward to inviting everyone down to the waterfront this August."
From mermaids and aliens to superheroes and sports heroes, the 1980s offer a wide range of films for everyone to enjoy. Three movies in total will be chosen by public vote from the following curated shortlist of movies:
- E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial
- Flight of the Navigator
- The Goonies
- The Karate Kid
- Beetlejuice
- The NeverEnding Story
- Batman
- Gremlins
- Uncle Buck
- Splash
- The Little Mermaid
- Dirty Rotten Scoundrels
- Ghostbusters
- Short Circuit
- Honey, I Shrunk the Kids
- Field of Dreams
Voting is open until July 16, 2015, and the three winning films will be announced shortly thereafter. Updates and early polling results will be released on Twitter and Facebook throughout the voting period. Once the movies have been chosen, free land-side tickets will be available from the Sail-In Cinema website; boaters will not require tickets. Movies will start at dusk (approximately 8:45 p.m.) on each of the three nights of the festival.
Since launching in 2011 as part of PortsToronto's centennial celebrations, Sail-In Cinema has grown to become a much-anticipated event for Torontonians, attracting up to 6,500 people on land and 90 boats each year.
PortsToronto is delighted to have Toyota Canada back as Sail-In Cinema's Pre-Show Sponsor. Other partners this year include Redpath Sugar, Toronto Star, CP24, North American Logistics Services Inc., Porter Airlines and the Waterfront BIA. There will also be a full program of pre-film events and experiences to ensure a full evening of fun for all in attendance.
