Power poles near Seaway International Bridge target of vandalism
CORNWALL, ON, March 25 /CNW Telbec/ - The Seaway International Bridge Corporation, Ltd. (SIBC) reports that on Tuesday night March 23, 2010, four power poles leading to the South Channel Bridge were cut down on properties of the Federal Bridge Corporation.
The poles carry electrical lines that supply power to equipment located on the Cornwall Island side of the International Bridge spanning the St. Lawrence River and the US / Canada border.
Akwesasne Mohawk Police Services, Cornwall Electric and Seaway Bridge personnel immediately responded to the emergency, allowing the crossing to remain open while ensuring the safety of the bridge users. The poles have been replaced and full power was restored by 8pm on Wednesday.
The cost of the damage and restoration efforts is estimated to be approximately $10,000.
