HALIFAX, Oct. 24, 2013 /CNW/ - Today, President's Choice® Children's Charity (PCCC) announced a gift of $919,840 to Breakfast for Learning in Atlantic Canada.
With $366,167 earmarked for nutrition programs in Nova Scotia alone, well over 7,500 local children will be positively impacted by this gift, which will furnish almost 1.2 million meals for young people throughout the 2013-14 school year.
A regional gift ceremony took place at École St. Catherine's School in Halifax during the school's breakfast program on Thursday morning with students and teachers, school nutritionists and representatives from Breakfast for Learning.
The gift presentation was made by President's Choice® Children's Charity's executive director, Peggy Hornell.
"One in 10 children in Canada living below the poverty line is a bit shocking," said Peggy Hornell, executive director, President's Choice® Children's Charity. "It's great to know that through our partnership Breakfast for Learning in Atlantic Canada we are able to help young people with a healthy snack or meal as part of their day."
Beverley Mahon, Atlantic Region Coordinator with Breakfast for Learning, attended the ceremony to accept the $919K gift on behalf of the organization.
"Hunger is a barrier to learning," said Beverley Mahon, Atlantic Region Coordinator, Breakfast for Learning. "President's Choice® Children's Charity's generous gift will allow us to feed children's success through the support of more than 220 school nutrition program across the Atlantic provinces, including over 80 here in Nova Scotia."
Following the gift ceremony Mark Boudreau, Director of Corporate Affairs, Loblaw Atlantic, presented St. Catherine's School principal Rosie Bona with a contribution of groceries from the local Atlantic Superstore for the school's breakfast program, while students returned to their hot breakfast ahead of the start of classes for the day.
