Include Fire Safety into Plans Urges Ontario Fire Marshal
TORONTO, Oct. 29, 2012 /CNW/ - For a safe and happy Halloween, the Ontario Fire Marshal is urging Ontario families to include fire safety into their plans.
"Stay safe and include fire safety in your plans for Halloween," says Tadeusz (Ted) Wieclawek, Ontario Fire Marshal. "Use battery-operated flameless candles in Halloween decorations, instead of real candles. Make sure there are working smoke alarms on every storey and outside all sleeping areas of your home, to ensure you have those precious seconds to escape, if a fire occurs."
Ontario families are urged to use battery-operated flameless candles or glow sticks in carved pumpkins and in other decorations. Using real candles increases the risk of a fire occurring. If real candles are used, keep them away from anything that can burn. Always blow candles out before leaving the room.
Other steps to reduce the risk of fire in Ontario homes include:
- Keep matches and lighters out of sight and reach of children.
- Ensure electrical outlets are not overloaded with holiday lighting or special effects.
- Keep costumes short to avoid tripping and falling. Minimize the risk of contact with candles or other items that can burn by avoiding baggy pants, loose frills or billowing skirts.
To keep parents and children safe from fire this Halloween, the Office of the Fire Marshal has developed a Halloween Safety Tips sheet geared to home fire safety.
