A Milestone in Honouring Canada's Christian Legacy and Values
TORONTO, Dec. 13, 2024 /CNW/ - At the Christmas on the Hill celebration hosted by Liberal MP Jean Yip on December 11th, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau delivered a powerful message in support of Canada's Christian community and their enduring contributions to the nation. His endorsement of the campaign to formally declare December as Canadian Christian Month marks a significant step in recognizing the foundational values that continue to shape Canadian society.
Molly Banerjei, CEO of the Christian Music Festival and a leading advocate for this initiative, reflected on the significance of this support: "Prime Minister Trudeau's personal pledge of support is the Christmas gift I've been waiting for. Meeting so many MPs and Ministers who backed our initiative was truly heartwarming. I am deeply grateful for this overwhelming support.
I also want to express my sincere thanks to MP Jean Yip. When I asked her to introduce a motion recognizing Canada's Christian legacy and to host Christmas on the Hill, she delivered on both. Her dedication and commitment to this initiative have been invaluable."
Motion M-171 calls for the House of Commons to recognize that, "In the opinion of the House, the government should designate the month of December, every year, as Canadian Christian Month." This motion acknowledges the historical and ongoing contributions of Christians to Canada's identity and underscores the importance of preserving and celebrating these contributions.
In his address, Prime Minister Trudeau emphasized the core principles of the Christian faith — peace, kindness, generosity, and service — values that resonate deeply within Canadian life. He praised the country's diverse Christian communities for their commitment to serving others and standing by the vulnerable.
We are happy to report that our tenacious advocacy has resulted in over 40 municipalities, two regions, and the province of Saskatchewan officially recognizing the Christian heritage of Canada. This growing recognition reflects the importance of acknowledging the values of faith, service, and community that have long contributed to the fabric of our nation.
Building Momentum for Recognition
"MPs and Ministers from diverse faiths and cultures have personally pledged their support for Motion M-171," Banerjei added. "This reflects the shared understanding that recognizing Christian heritage contributes to the broader story of Canada's multicultural fabric."
Christian Heritage Month initiative is a movement by the Christian Music Festival, a Toronto based non-profit dedicated to fostering unity, inclusivity and multiculturalism through music and community events. Founded by Jay and Molly Banerjei, the festival attracts over 20,000 attendees annually and serves as a platform to celebrate faith and heritage.
