Prime Minister visits 3M Canada's research and development laboratory in London, Ontario
LONDON, ON, April 5, 2017 /CNW/ - Prime Minister Justin Trudeau toured one of 3M Canada's research and development laboratories during a visit to the science company. The tour included interactive demonstrations of 3M's science expertise; from advanced manufacturing and clean technology to digital health care, the Prime Minister saw firsthand how 3M successfully approaches innovation: with a commitment to scientific exploration and the belief that every problem has a solution.
"We are honoured by Prime Minister Trudeau's visit and share in his commitment to keeping innovation and diversity a key priority for Canadian businesses," said Mojdeh Poul, president and general manager, 3M Canada. "We are here today because we are proud of the R&D work our team is doing, and also our partnerships with government, post-secondary institutions and research organizations on collaborative, science and innovation projects across the country."
3M Canada's research and development team demonstrated new technologies and products, some of which were developed in Canada, for Canadian companies. The demonstrations included:
Advanced Manufacturing
Presented by Kejian Zhang, MSc
Senior Application Development Specialist
VHB™ tape from 3M is a high strength, double-sided acrylic adhesive tape that creates efficiencies and simplifies processes for Canadian customers. The pressure-sensitive adhesive creates an instant bond without any drying time required. VHB is used as an alternative to rivets and fasteners, particularly in the automotive and aerospace industries.
Digital Health Care
Presented by Sylvia Cleaver, B.Sc
Applications Development Professional for 3M Healthcare, Sterilization and Electrodes
The 3M™ Clean-Trace™ ATP Cleaning Monitoring System is a cleaning efficacy monitoring tool that measures cleanliness of tools and surfaces in healthcare. In just 30 seconds, the Clean-Trace System can quantify the cleanliness of a surface, leading to the implementation of cleaning protocols to reduce the risk of infection for a patient during hospital stay.
Presented by Dr. Doug Quong, Ph.D., P.Eng.
Professional Services for 3M Oral Care Division
The 3M™ True Definition Scanner is a technologically advanced digital orthodontics system designed to deliver a better patient experience. Utilizing 3M's 3D-in-motion video imaging technology, the system creates a true replica of the oral anatomy from real-time video data.
Clean Technology
Presented by Dr. Ranjith Divigalpitiya, Ph.D.
Senior Specialist / Physicist
3M Canada researchers have developed the Nano Current Collector and the nano-scale coating technology to improve energy storage, vehicle electrification, energy efficient and tunable insulation for cold climates, and water quality.
Presented by Dr. Weixing Hou, B.Sc., M.Sc., Ph.D.
Senior Application Development Specialist
Novec™ 1230 works quickly, cleanly and efficiently to help stop a fire before it starts through a cooling system. Unlike water, the fluid is non-conductive so it won't damage electronics or paper. Novec 1230 can be used as an open bath immersion for server cooling, reducing the reliance on air conditioners or chillers, reducing energy consumption and reducing data centre footprint.
"3M believes everyone has a role in strengthening STEM education. Our support begins with the youngest learners and continues through post-secondary education to employment," continues Poul. "In fact, 3M is a proud founding partner of Canada 2067: a cross-country movement that strives to help children and youth understand STEM education benefits, explore potential STEM careers and encourage their natural curiosity through science."
