Professors applaud new report on the economic impact of universities

TORONTO , Nov. 30 /CNW/ - The Ontario Confederation of University Faculty Associations (OCUFA) welcomes a new report on the beneficial economic effects of Ontario's universities. The report, titled OUSA Report: Economic Impact of Universities, was released today by the Ontario Undergraduate Student Alliance (OUSA).

"This paper confirms that our universities are powerful engines for economic growth," said Professor Mark Langer , President of OCUFA. "In order to compete in the global knowledge economy, Ontario needs an accessible, well-funded and high-quality higher education system."

OUSA's report explores the various personal and societal benefits of higher education, including individual economic success, the beneficial outcomes of advanced research, and the economic "multiplier" effect of a university operating within a community. The report also highlights the urgent need to increase public funding for Ontario's universities to ensure and expand educational quality. Public support is also needed to ensure that every qualified Ontarian, regardless of background, can participate in higher education.

"Ontario's faculty stands with students in their call for greater public funding for our universities," said Prof. Langer . "With proper funding, Ontario's universities can fulfill all of their important social and economic roles. An investment in higher education is an investment in the people of Ontario, the strength of our economy, and the vitality of our democratic society."
