Progress Summit maps out a path forward for a more prosperous Canada

OTTAWA, March 28, 2014 /CNW/ - Leading progressive minds are convening at the Broadbent Institute's inaugural Progress Summit in Ottawa this weekend.

Institute chair Ed Broadbent says he hopes Progress Summit participants "leave having crystallized some important ideas to move Canada forward."

Broadbent, a former leader of the New Democratic Party of Canada, created the institute in 2011 to be an independent, non-partisan resource for progressive change in Canada.

With the theme of "Paths to New Prosperity," the summit's keynotes include Julia Gillard, the former prime minister of Australia.

The summit's panels focus on shared prosperity, building a green economy and democratic renewal. Leaders in online engagement are also sharing how to craft winning campaigns and bridge online and offline campaigning.

Summit panelist Elizabeth Plank, Executive Social Editor for PolicyMica is clear about social media's role:

"If you're designing a digital campaign, but you're not thinking about social media, you're doing something wrong," she said.

Keynote speaker Anastasia Khoo, the spark that set off Facebook's most viral campaign of the iconic red and pink marriage equality profile photo, had a strong message:

"You have to meet people where they are," Khoo said. "Social media has changed the way people communicate, so it's imperative that you are part of that conversation."

Conversation will be a pillar of the summit's success, said Broadbent. "Movements are built on personal connections."
