Proposed new distracted driving laws the strongest in Canada
New legislation aims to increase safety on Ontario's roads.
THORNHILL, ON, Sept. 20, 2017 /CNW/ - Distracted driving continues to be a menace on Ontario roads, endangering the lives of motorists, cyclists and pedestrians.
As a longtime advocate of road safety, CAA South Central Ontario (CAA SCO) strongly applauds today's announcement by the Ministry of Transportation to toughen distracted driving laws, among other recommendations, making conditions safer for everyone.
If passed, the proposed legislation would make Ontario's distracted driving laws the toughest in Canada.
"The new measures proposed by the provincial government will hopefully encourage motorists across Ontario to keep their hands on the wheel and focus on the road," says Elliott Silverstein, Manager of Government Relations for CAA SCO.
While the Making Ontario's Road Safer Act, made several legislative changes to protect cyclists across the province, issues around pedestrian safety have increased in recent years. The new legislation will include measures to safeguard children, seniors, pedestrians and cyclists.
"Distracted driving continues to be a growing and dangerous challenge on our roads. It only takes a moment to dramatically change your life or someone else's. No text message or e-mail is worth risking your life or the life of another road user," adds Silverstein.
CAA is dedicated to helping change certain rules and regulations for Ontario's roads that will improve safety for everyone who uses them. Through its road safety campaign Heads Up! CAA has been helping to educate and bring awareness about distracted driving, Slow Down, Move Over rules and cycling safety laws.
