On June 4, 1989, peaceful student demonstrators, workers and civilians whose calls for democratic reforms and an end to rampant corruption were crushed with tanks and bullets in Tiananmen Square. Now 27 years later, we will meet once again to march in remembrance of those who died that night and in the days and weeks that followed the brutal crackdown following the Beijing Spring.
Toronto Association for Democracy in China wishes to use the occasion of the 27th anniversary to once again call for the Chinese government to vindicate the 1989 student protests and to support the efforts of the Hong Kong Alliance to keep the Tiananmen memory alive. TADC condemns the continued arrests of Chinese journalists and rights activists who speak out for injustices. These arrests are in clear violation of the fundamental and universal human rights: freedom of expression.
TADC will continue to hold our Prime Minister Trudeau and Minister of Foreign Affairs Stephen Dion accountable to Canada's obligations to protect and promote human rights. In their quest for economic prosperity and trade, Canadians will not tolerate human rights violations, environmental degradation or the suppression of dissent.
